xmas 9: Jesus..kinda like a buffet?

Alongside our celebration of the ninth day of Christmas is National Buffet Day. I wish I was at a buffet right now. Food unites us all. It brings us together despite our differences. Food finds common ground. Buffets give a lot of choice, too, so unity is a lot easier.

“National Buffet Day is for those who can never decide what they want from the menu, for those who enjoy a plate piled high, and for those who just love to eat.”

As the quote above explains, there are a variety of people who find themselves at a buffet. There are the indecisive types, the hungry types, the food lovers, and of course folks like me who are all of the above.

This buffet style convenience is something that I find in more place than one — and most importantly in my spiritual life.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on this ninth day of the feast of Christmas, we all find ourselves in a variety of spiritual positions. Some of us are undecided on what we want out of our spiritual lives. We just can’t figure it out. Then, there are some of us that are yearning for more and more consumption of the spiritual. Finally, there are people who just enjoy having spiritual encounters — they may not need them but are enjoyable to have in one’s free time.

The beauty of the Christmas story is that it begins with the birth of a savior that is destined to unite us all.

Galatians 3:28: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” (NRSV)

The spiritual path to Jesus is.. kinda like a buffet. All of us come to the food choices with differences in taste, opinion, experience, and interests, but we all come together at the Jesus buffet to find the light and life that we seek for our own journey.
